Booked in a hurry, and now you're staring at a middle seat three rows from the rest of your group. It happens on almost every Indian domestic route. Here's what actually works, in order of how likely it is to help.
Option 1: Change it yourself before check-in
Log back into your booking on the airline's app or website — IndiGo, Air India, Akasa, and SpiceJet all let you revisit your seat selection any time before check-in closes, usually for a fee unless a free standard seat happens to be open. Web check-in typically opens 48 hours before departure, and it's worth checking again a day or two before you fly: as other passengers check in, seats free up or shift, so the map you saw at booking isn't final.
Option 2: Ask at the counter or gate
Counter and gate staff can move you if there's an open seat, but it's entirely discretionary and depends on how full the flight is. On busy Indian domestic routes, that often means there's simply nothing left to offer by the time you arrive.
Option 3: Swap with a co-passenger
If the flight's full and nobody official can help, the only "available" seats left are the ones other passengers are sitting in. This isn't something you arrange before check-in — it happens later, at the airport, once you're already checked in and usually right around boarding. It only works if you can find someone willing — and if you both know it's your genuine, PNR-verified seat being offered.
Bottom line: changing it yourself before check-in is the cheapest and most reliable fix. The counter is a coin flip once you're at the gate. A direct swap — the one you arrange yourself around boarding — is your best shot once the flight's full and no one official can move you.
