Booking a train ticket on IRCTC locks in a berth, but it doesn't lock in your journey. Plenty of things can make you want a different seat after you've already booked: a middle berth when you wanted a window, a booking that landed you three rows from the rest of your family, or simply a better spot opening up once the chart is prepared. Here's what's actually possible, and when.
Can you officially "change" a seat through IRCTC?
Not really, and this is the part most people get wrong. IRCTC doesn't offer a self-service "change seat" button after a booking is confirmed. What you can do falls into three categories:
Before the chart is prepared. Indian Railways typically prepares the first reservation chart around 4 hours before departure for most trains (timing varies — check your PNR status closer to travel), and a final chart shortly before departure. Before the first chart, seat allocation can still shift as cancellations and RAC/waitlist movement happen automatically through the system — this is out of your direct control, but it's the window where "upgrades" most often happen on their own.
Requesting the TTE on board. Once you're on the train, if a seat you'd prefer is unoccupied or its passenger is willing, the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) can informally accommodate a seat change within the coach — but this is entirely at their discretion, not a guaranteed right, and it depends on the TTE's charting records and coach occupancy that day.
Coordinating directly with a co-passenger. If another passenger in your coach has the seat you want and is happy to trade, a mutual swap — done with the TTE's awareness — is a normal, accepted part of train travel in India. The catch has always been finding that person and coordinating with them, especially on a train full of strangers.
